To help you understand oil better, here are the answers to the questions we’re most frequently asked.

Plenty of people try to top up their engine oil to avoid having to do a full oil change. Unfortunately, modern engines really don’t respond very well to doing this.

When you put new oil on top of old oil, you can cause problems with the older oil that’s still in your engine.

It’s a much better choice to use a product like Torenzoil to keep your engine running well between oil changes.

What you’re looking at is a difference in what’s in each type of oil.

Semi-synthetic oil is a mixture of high-performance fluids and conventional mineral oil.

Fully synthetic oil, on the other hand, is just the 100% high-performance fluids.  Fully synthetic oils tend to be better suited for high-performance, though semi-synthetic oils do tend to cost less.

At its core, synthetic oil is a lubricant that improves upon nature’s design. The synthetic components have fewer impurities than conventional mineral oil, which can help to keep the moving parts of your engine protected and ensure that your car runs better.

Synthetics generally help to do everything that conventional mineral oil can do, but cleaner and more efficiently.

Oil does a few major things for your engine.

1. Clean The Engine

It keeps your engine clean – oil clears away the particulate matter and keeps it intact until it can be flushed during an oil change.

2. Minimising Friction & Wear

Oil also minimizing friction, which in turn minimizes the wear and tear on your car.

Remember, the moving parts of your engine move against one another, and that movement not only generates heat but it also wears down the parts when not lubricated – thus the need for oil.

3. Removing Heat

Speaking of heat, oil does a fantastic job of carrying it away from your engine. While all engines necessarily run hotter than you’d think, your oil helps to move that oil around so that the heat isn’t too concentrated in one place.

4. Preventing Corrosion & Rust

Finally, oil helps to make sure that your engine doesn’t get corroded or rusted between oil changes.

This isn’t just a cosmetic issue – keeping your engine safe means that your car will run longer.

No, you don’t need to change your oil as soon as it turns black. In fact, the color change indicates that your oil is actually doing its job by trapping the various impurities that can be found in your engine.

As time goes by, your oil is going to darken – don’t worry about the color, just make sure that you keep to your recommended oil change interval

You should not use two different oils in one engine. Oils have different mixtures, after all, and the wrong combinations can wreak havoc on your engine.

If you absolutely have to use a different oil, make sure that you use something that’s of the same quality level and, if possible, from the same brand.

If you find yourself in a spot where you have to combine oils, make sure that you change out your oil filter during your next oil change as well.

The label tells you things like the viscosity rating and the service designation.

There’s no set answer to this question. The interval between lubricant changes varies with the vehicle, how it’s used, the mileage since the last change and the amount of time that has passed since the last change.

The manufacturer of your car makes a recommendation that’s based on expected conditions, so this is a good place to start. Some cars also have an indicator on the instrument panel that tells you when a lubricant change is due.

Engine oil lubricates the engine, protects it from wear and corrosion and helps keep it cooled. Too little or the wrong kind of oil can damage your engine or even cause it to seize. Even the highest quality oil will eventually break down and accumulate contaminants, which puts your engine at even higher risk.

Replacing the lubricant in your car with clean oil that has the right properties for your engine is the best way to have trouble-free driving. An oil change is quick and inexpensive, and it can save you from costly repairs down the road.

Engine oil starts with a base. Viscosity modifiers are added to get different levels of viscosity, and some oils also have performance additives, like detergents.

All of these components are combined in different ways to get lubricants that are ideal for different uses, like gasoline engines, diesel engines or high mileage vehicles.

Motor oil is toxic to the environment, so you must dispose of it properly. Don’t ever pour it down a drain or pour it out on the ground. In most places, it’s illegal to do this.

You can check with your local authorities to find out where to dispose of your used oil. Your community may have a household hazardous waste collection point that takes used oil, or you may be able to drop it off at an auto shop.

Viscosity ratings are set by the SAE. If an oil only has one number, it’s a monograde oil, and the number refers to its viscosity at low temperatures. An example of this is SAE 40.

If the oil has two numbers, the first one, followed by a “W” for winter, is the viscosity at low temperatures while the second number is its viscosity at high temperatures. An example of this type of multigrade oil is SAE 10W-40.

Lubricating oil is a catch-all term for any substances that reduce the friction between two surfaces that are moving against one another. In a very literal sense, lubricating oil is the oil that lubricates the motion between the parts.

Regardless of the brand name or the grade, every lubricating oil is essentially going to accomplish the same tasks in your vehicle. This oil is going to

  • reduce friction between metal parts,
  • keep your engine clean and cool,
  • protect your mechanical components from wear and tear,
  • and help to ensure that gas leaks don’t happen within the combustion chamber of your engine.

Your engine is a machine made of many moving parts. If these parts get dirty, they’re going to be less efficient and have a tendency to break more quickly.

As such, your engine oil’s ability to keep the component parts of your engine clean is actually one of its most important functions.

Oils like Torenzoil mineral engine oils are meant to improve performance by keeping engines clean.

Torenzoil is a relatively new development, one made with more modern vehicles in mind. These synthetic oils tend to carry five specific benefits:

1 Fuel 5 Benefits:

  • Fuel savings
  • Quicker low-temperature ignition
  • Longer life than standard oil
  • Up to 5 times more friction protection
  • Allows for maximum engine performance
